Day 1208

Sammy continues to amaze me as a Therapy Dog! Although today, at a beloved senior living complex, he tugged a bit and tended to take a sidetrack here and there, with every single senior, he was the most precious beastie on the planet. Even when he did his “Signature Sammy Paw” on everyone’s lap or arm, it was with the most gentle touch ever!

We spent time in Memory Care and enjoyed special friends in Assisted Living where our boy greeted every person with love. He even received a special prayer/blessing from one of our favorites. Beautiful…

There is often a particular resident who takes up more of our time than others. As we were exiting, her door slowly opened and I could see dog treats in her lap. So much for a quick escape! We were gently “trapped.” Grabbing my patience and kind attitude by the seat of their pants, we followed her into her room for a visit.

Sammy, who had been reasonably well-behaved for a first visit, took on a new persona. As she began dispensing treats, she talked to him and rubbed his head with her beautiful manicured nails. My pup leaned into her as he wore the most loving, adoring look on his face. He was mesmerized by this resident!

We visited for a bit and then it was time to leave. Sam leaned just a little closer and glanced at me as if to say, “Bye, Mom! Pick me up next week!” I cajoled him into following me to the door, but only after some convincing! I realized I had just been to a “puppy class” taught by a young golden retriever! My lesson: “Open your heart to the possibilities of every person you meet. They might just surprise you with hidden qualities worth digging for!”

Sam is asleep at my feet and probably dreaming of this morning’s adventures. I am wide awake feeling grateful for the reminder to open my heart to everyone. Sammy sure does!
