Day 1320

The other day I was sewing up a rip in my grandson’s jacket with my “Halo of Goldens” close at hand. Being watchful of the needle, I let them sniff and stay close by. They often see me using a crochet hook or knitting needles, but rarely a sewing needle. Not being much of a seamstress, I rarely thread a needle unless it is to help my family with a torn garment.

My family comes to me because it is part of my job description. I never hesitate because it makes me feel needed. The duties of a mother or grandmother are not so different. The real benefit of being a matriarch is that I have time when, as a mom, I was burning the candle at both ends and sometimes in the middle.

My present duties consist mostly of supporting family, listening, cheerleading, accepting and keeping the memories alive. Before, other senior members of the family had those responsibilities while my “mom time” had additional duties. Of course, I listened (when I was not working), cheerleading (whenever I possibly could) and supported my “bookend family generations.. parents and children (every chance I got). However, I had so much on my plate, I relied on my parents, and surrogate parents (dear Colliers) for support more than they knew.

Now it’s my turn. I watched the very best people model family support, a listening ear, acceptance and actually being present in any given moment. At this point, sewing up a rip is a right of passage and an honor. So bring on those torn clothes, broken hearts, sporting events and “snuggle needs”…there will also be a few Goldens around for the snuggling portion of a visit!
