Day 1408

Charlie and Hank have learned a lot from their big brothers. The list is long, but a few talents are…

* going outside through the doggy door

* sitting for a treat

* running in circles around the gazebo

* waiting their turn for a treat

And…a few we wish they hadn’t picked up…

*begging

*chewing mysterious items in the backyard

*barking for their morning Cheerios

Still, four months ago they hadn’t put a paw on the planet yet and their learning (good and bad) is a miracle! I am in awe!

Of course, the little boys are already in training to be Therapy Dogs within the year and that learning is intentional and planned. It is the incidental teachings that need my attention. Bad habits are hard to erase!

With my own children, students and even adults who interact with me, I have always tried to set a good example. At home and at school, I was very cognizant of leading by example. Beyond those arenas, I admit my focus might have been elsewhere. It seemed that nobody was actually learning anything from my actions plus it wasn’t like I was a Hollywood personality who others might emulate. Still…I realized I was still observing and “taking notes” on those around me, so I might still influence others without knowing.

Instead of a constant awareness of others learning by my example, it seemed better to just do my best to “do the right thing.” Whether people observe you or not, it is just easier to choose the high road. Then, if someone is “taking notes,” you’re setting a good example.

Charlie and Hank are almost perfect little boys at this point! As much as I hope that my instructions are a guiding force, their brothers have more influence than I do. Lucky for us, the older boys are amazing models!
