Day 1464
Mr. Gus and I spent the morning at Mercy Hospital. He met a multitude of people who snuggled, petted and simply loved on our boy. He enjoyed each and every encounter!
As we walk along, our interactions always include a question or two…
Is he your dog?
Did you train him?
How old is he?
How much does he weigh?
Do you get paid to do this?
Yes! Yes! 4. 100. No
The list of questions and answers goes on and on. Every once in a great while, someone asks me “Why do you do this work?” That inquiry always stops me in my tracks. Why indeed!
Of course, one needs the time to devote and a dog (or five) to begin with, but many individuals can check those two boxes off. So, depending on the person inquiring, I start by saying it is a true calling. Some are content at that point, but others want a deeper look.
I feel called to do this work. Seeing the smiles and heightened spirits is on the surface. Deep down, I can sense the soothing of frightened or sad hearts. I also see a softening of spirits. Often, as they pet one of the Golden Boys, they open up and share some of what is weighing them down. In the end, it gives me a sense that, in a small way, we are making the world a better place…and that is the “Why.”
Gus and I were both tired when we returned home. It was the kind of tired that feels good and fulfilling. I hugged my boy and said, “Well done, Sweet Gus. You made so many people happy today.” He looked at me for a moment, plopped down on the cool floor and then shut his eyes for a well-deserved snooze.
I am so grateful for my Therapy dogs and the journey they share with me.
