Day 1598
Gus and Hank are “On guard” against an intruder. All five Golden Boys seem to take turns protecting us from “the unknown!” Any noise, movement or sound coming from the outside is a sign of danger and must be dealt with! Silly boys!
Back in time, our collies would bark whenever they had the chance! Herding was in their genes and they wanted order and humans to be “rounded up!” Mickey modeled that behavior for Rosie, Rosie for Arthur, Arthur for Oreo…and the Goldens followed. All of them have learned, and take great joy in barking.
Humans learn from modeling as well. We show our little ones how to tie their shoes, model good table manners and share the way to do the dishes. What we sometimes forget is that we are modeling ALL the time. Our words and actions are on display and young feet might just follow in our footsteps. What a daunting thought.
It’s impossible to be the perfect role model every moment, but it is worth some serious thought. Words, actions, beliefs and other choices we make are being watched. Even with other adults, our behaviors are powerful displays to anyone.
Now, how to break the cycle of barking? Positive behavior (no barking) is rewarded. Perhaps quiet will be the new habit to emulate!
