Day 518
Every morning, my sweet Goldens parade by the school crossing guards on our various walks. Sam is loved from a distance, the seniors are welcomed with open arms, but Gus is a crowd favorite! He leans in, rolls over and chooses other antics that cement his fan club. He truly is a dear boy!
This morning, as Gus and I left his adoring followers, I glibly called, "See you tomorrow!"...a common parting comment. Then, I looked at Gus who seemed to say, "How can you be so sure about that?" His look made me take a moment to contemplate my words.
Actually, in all probability, I will see them tomorrow. However, weather, health, timing and a host of other occurrences could change the course of our days. I decided two things in that moment:
1. I need a better parting remark.
2. I need to be more sincere in my brief, daily interactions!
Pondering further, I realized I use a number of these, less than thoughtful, comments. Although generic greetings are better than no acknowledgement at all, there is room for improvement!
My goal is to offer a heartfelt remark when I encounter people on my Golden walks. Perhaps something like...
"You have such energy in your step today!"
"Your smile just makes me happy!"
"Aren't we lucky to have such a glorious day for a walk?"
Well...I suppose sincere comments will arise when I encounter others, but I am committed to speaking to those I meet from my heart!
As for Gus and his furry siblings, they ALWAYS speak from the heart with their happy faces and wagging tales!
