Day 1100

Treats are the best thing in my Goldens’ world…perhaps only second to back scratches and tummy rubs. They would do just about anything for a Milk Bone!

Perhaps it has something to do with a loving gesture/offering from those they adore. In my own childhood, food was certainly a sign of love and caring. My own Nanny always had cookie dough and often fresh cookies right out of the oven. Grandma Babcock made fresh donuts for the neighborhood gang once a week and dear Elaine served us grenadine/7-Up with popcorn in front of Star Trek (on her white carpet!). Marge Pauley made gooey rolls and caramel bars to complement Maynard’s incredible popcorn! Now that’s love!

In later years, it was my turn to have fresh chocolate chip cookies at the ready for my own children and their friends. I absolutely enjoyed every minute of watching my four, and their friends, devour dozens at a time. Those cookies were an offering of love.

We offer food as a way of saying that others matter and are loved. In Minnesota, the vast number of “hot dishes” offered to families in crises is an indication of caring hearts. Food has a message that breaks all language barriers. It tells people that they matter.

As for the Goldens, I am not sure if they get that message, but they certainly understand that treats are a good thing from good people. They haven’t turned one down yet!
