Day 1187
Today was a quick visit to the veterinarian with Gus and Sammy. Both pups were itchy and we knew it was time for their allergy shot. When we arrived, t he pups took one look at the door and politely refused to go in the inside! Once confronted with a stern “invitation,” they entered grudgingly…poor babies! Past experiences and present smells were not the most inviting welcome!
We often are uneasy about things we know are good for us! Dentists, doctor appointments, exercise and other life events hold memories of angst. Still, we move forward and walk through that door!
Once through the door, things often look brighter. There are people to support and encourage us and a feeling of accomplishment or relief awaits before we exit. However, what if we feel we have to walk through that door alone? Perhaps, once inside, it does not seem very encouraging. Well…often, we forge ahead because that is part of life.
Today, at the veterinarian office, we encouraged and cajoled our two boys in. Comforting them as we waited, it wasn’t long before a tech came out and asked, “Who’s first?” I swear the pups looked at each other and almost pointed a paw!!! Off they went… tails between their legs and heads hanging low. Good babies!
As we waited for one and then the other, a couple sat across from us and we began to chat about the Goldens. I sensed all was not well with them. Finally, with eyes hidden behind sunglasses, the woman told us they were here to pick up their beloved dog’s ashes. Feeling her pain, I was not going to let her suffer alone. The tears streaming down both our faces were the bond and I hope our encounter helped them on their painful journey.
We all face those doors and, sometimes, it seems as if we are alone. I, for one, am going to be on the lookout for those who need a little support as they take that first step. A smile, a shared tear, a word or a touch on the shoulder might just be what someone needs to face the unknown.
Gus and Sam are happy it’s over, but they had that support. If you were to ask them, they did it all by themselves with heads held high and no trepidation whatsoever! We know better!!!
