Day 1193

When we visit any senior care facility, the residents have figured out the way to our boys’ hearts…treats. It started out with just a couple “friends” who offered treats, but others soon realized they would get more nuzzles and love if they had a Milkbone up their sleeve! I keep a watchful “Mommy Eye” on the offerings, but have figured out ways to intercede while still honoring the gift. My boys would eat until they exploded!!!

I, myself, am a “food pusher!” Some might say that is a Minnesota thing (think hotdishes, fresh bread and warm cookies), but I believe it is a personality trait…or flaw. I will not be satisfied until I am assured that my guests are stuffed to discomfort! If seconds are embraced, what about thirds and fourths? This does not even begin to take into account dessert!

Why do Food Pushers push? Perhaps there are some who detest leftovers while others take offense to guests not clamoring for more helpings. For me, it seems to be all about the joy of people savoring their meal. It feels so good to offer others sustenance and know they are enjoying every bite. I love to see people delight in what food I have created… even if they can’t eat another bite!

I understand and embrace the sharing of food. Gus and his brothers do too! When a senior citizen reaches into their pocket to grab and offer a dog treat, I don’t have the heart to totally turn them down… I understand their need and desire to connect! Food is a universal language for people and dogs…Gus is a fluent communicator!
