Day 1198
I am ALWAYS watched! Well…there may be times in the dead of night that all eyes at “The Big White House” are closed, but I wouldn’t bet on it! Wherever I am, whatever I am doing, there are eyes focused on me. It could be intimidating, but I don’t mind.
The Golden Boys are simply connected to me. I suppose they see me as some kind of “alpha,” that keeps the pack safe and sound. Although there is some truth to that, being “alpha” is not a role I have ever played well. My personality tends to lean the other way.
As a classroom teacher, I needed to play the part of leader, but my style was always to lead with love. Threatening, punishing or raising my voice simply was not a part of my repertoire.
Years ago, one of my third graders had quite a reputation for making poor choices in the classroom. After months of building a relationship, I saw the result of the time spent on gaining his trust and affection. After an epic outburst, this young boy ran over to a bookshelf and began banging his head on the corner as hard as he could. After about the third time, I placed my hand on the edge and allowed him to slam his noggin onto my hand. Calmly telling him he was hurting me, he suddenly stopped and apologized giving us the opportunity to chat and choose a better reaction. Whew! Was I glad that worked!
There is something to be said for a gentle alpha/leader. People often react better to loving words and actions rather than loud, angry demands.
I will try to remember that the next time a dog has the audacity to walk down the sidewalk in front of the house. The boys barking is crazed! Perhaps soft words and a treat might work better than dragging them inside against their will! We shall see…
