Day 1236

It’s that time of year when the Halloween decorations explode around Anoka, “The Halloween Capital of the World!” Ghost Tours march quietly by The Big White House and the festivities begin throughout the town. Tonight is The Pumpkin Bowl!!!

In 1920, the city of Anoka decided it was time to stop the shenanigans around town. Cows had been appearing on rooftops, outhouses were tipped over and other nefarious deeds were being committed . My uncle, Larry Farrier, was one of the initial organizers and joined others to turn the youngsters’ pranks into a celebration. A parade, bonfire and other Halloween activities were offered to funnel the young peoples’ energies into more acceptable “fun”.

I do remember the enormous bonfires, followed by the high school band leading a snake dance of happy merrymakers through the town. I also recall the night parade, which ended by circling the football field as the halftime show! What a wonderful night for a child of the 1950s and 1960s!

So tonight, we will sit on the front porch with our ‘Halo of Goldens’ and enjoy the show as the Anoka Tornadoes (formerly known as the “Spuds”) take the field to the cheers and screams of the crowd (along with some major barking). What a night!
