Day 1330

Today we had the opportunity to read with second graders at my elementary alma-mater. The children arrive in groups of three and share a book with Ranger. While one is reading, the other two get some “Ranger Time.” It is a win-win for the children AND Ranger!

Today a young boy began to read and our big Golden perked up, snuggled in and insisted that he be able to touch the child as he read. A calm fell over the second grader and he seemed to enjoy every page. Ranger’s behavior was noticed by myself and the other two adults in the room. When the readers left, after a final hug for Ranger, one of the adults shed some possible light on the connection.

Being a staff member at the school, she remembered that the little boy had cried last year while attempting to read to our Golden Boy. His skills were challenged by the book and I remember tears falling on the pages. Of course, he was redirected to simply spend time with Ranger and his stress disappeared. The moment turned out to be a positive experience.

We wondered… could it be possible that Ranger remembered and wanted to make sure the young reader knew he was there to support him? It’s hard to know for sure, but our “golden oldie” seemed to lavish love, closeness and acceptance on this boy. He certainly helped the young reader relax and enjoy the experience!

Empathy is such a gift to others. To walk in someone’s shoes and understand their heart can change the course of a person’s journey. Dogs seem to have a sixth sense for understanding emotions in others. They come by it naturally.

Did Ranger remember the young reader? I believe he did at some visceral level. It seems a dog’s heart is always open and ready to love…another lesson they teach us. Empathy can change the world. It certain)ly seemed to change our young friend today!
