Day 1332
Those who share their Therapy Dog with young readers know the magic of those moments.
One friend witnessed a selective mute child speak to her goldendoodle for the first time since a traumatic event. Staff stood in awe with tears in their eyes as the little girl whispered in Brewster’s ear as she shared a book with him. His handler had no clue as to the miracle she was witnessing. Magic.
My Goldens have certainly been present when the “magic” happens…but why? It might just be their unconditional love, acceptance and lack of any judgment. Their brains, spirits and hearts simply don’t process negativity. Children (and adults) sense that openness and respond in kind. It is beautiful to witness over and over and might be why Therapy Dogging is near and dear to my heart.
Every encounter teaches me to be a better human. They share their beautiful spirits with relative strangers and touch my very being… leading me to try to be more Golden. The main lesson: Open your heart to those you encounter… no judgment necessary.
The real miracle is that they don’t even realize how wonderful they are. Being at the other end of the leash is a gift indeed.
