Day 1343
We are all accustomed to our climate and environment. For Minnesotans, cold, snow and ice are part of the routine. Those of us born here barely blanch at a -32 windchill. Like the generation before us, we simply stay inside until it warms up above 0 degrees!
Speaking of those relatives from our past, my great-grandparents could not snuggle in with a good book. As farmers, just north of here, they had animals to tend to and paths to shovel to the barn and outbuildings. Their outerwear must have been flimsy, compared to today’s standards, but their work ethic made up for that.
Remembering my grandparents and parents, the work ethic continued, but technology helped a bit. By the time I was in high school, my father had a snowblower to speed up the snow removal. Prior to that, it might take him two days to shovel snow from the driveway, sidewalks and neighbors’ homes (senior citizens). He never once complained.
In today’s world, life has adopted so many inventions that ease our workload. Dishwashers, washing machines, grocery pickups, computers, microwaves, fast food options for meals…the list is endless and growing every day. My question is twofold:

1. How did past generations accomplish so much?
2. Why can’t we accomplish more with all the help from technology?
Looking at my own life, although retirement holds many opportunities to volunteer with the Goldens, why can’t I get more done??? When I am honest, I probably spend too much time on my phone, Facebook or in front of my computer or television…all choices.
Deciding to give myself permission to slow down a bit, I am reminded that dog walks and yardwork are right around the corner! Until then, I will set my sights on a more productive, active month or two. Perhaps a couple closets or the constantly messy basement could use my help. Hmmm, right after I check to see what is on the Hallmark channel tonight!!!!
