Day 1400

Today, Gus was able to spend quality time with a number of students at Lincoln. The majority of our “guest readers” had a challenge or two. These precious children, who just happened to have a disability, were so very excited to share time with our Golden.

One sweet one had a challenge with sight. She came in, and after locating Gus, had the best interaction. She first said, “He is beautiful!” That comment was followed by a barrage of verbal reactions to his soft fur, his cold nose and our boy’s wagging tail. She went on to talk about dogs in her life (Her para indicated she had no dogs.) and other adventures that were not quite part of reality. As I watched, her small hands help her to see Gus, I marveled at her creative “memories,”

It occurred to me that this child, without sight to keep her grounded, was letting her brain take wing. Those of us who can see might never create a more wonderful world in our minds. I was charmed by her stories and marveled at her ability to share her imagination with us as if it were real. Perhaps, for those of us who negate creative notions because we can “see” they are not real, should try to venture into that creative realm where our young guest resided. The smile on her face told me it was a very happy place to wander.

Others came and went, but that little girl stayed right with me. Perhaps I will close my eyes from time-to-time and let my stories take wing.
