Day 1401

Our amazing neighbors have chickens! We watched as they built the coop and brought the little chicks home. We certainly have delighted in watching them grow. Our bigger boys mostly ignore them, but the little guys are mesmerized.

Today, Charlie was interested in the noises flowing through the fence. Chickens make interesting sounds (certainly beyond a cluck or two) and he simply couldn’t focus on anything else.

We placed a barrier mesh up so our neighbors would not have stressed birds. Being the recipients of more than a few wonderful eggs, we appreciate the fact that the chickens thrive without too much noise. Our feathered friends, however, have a vast array of vocal talents. I love them!

Charlie and Hank are still learning their way around this new world, so hearing the chickens loudly vocalizing caused them to decide whether to approach or retreat. Of course, the curious cuties approached and were sitting there when one of the chickens decided to fly up and sit on the fence right before their eyes! They decided that any further observation would be from behind me! After it flew back down, I lifted each one to peer over the fence until they seemed to accept their neighborhood buddies.

Sometimes, when “the unknown” looms before you, it helps to have a trusted friend to hide behind until you can analyze the threat. I know I have used that method myself from time-to-time. Like today, I have also been the one to stand between a perceived threat and safety. It is an honor!

Charlie and Hank have so much to learn, but now they can check “chickens” off the “Scary List.” I was only too happy to assist!
