Day 1499

Charlie (snuggled into his brother’s back) was the “sacrificial puppy” at the veterinarian’s today. Needing more heart worm and tic medication, only one boy needed to go in for a weighing session. Charlie made the mistake of heading out the door first, so he was my victim! Weighing 64.2 pounds, he was a shivering, whimpering pup. Without his brother, there is no bravado whatsoever! Poor baby! When we returned home, the other four Goldens acted like he had been gone FOREVER! After a speedy lunch/catch-up, Charlie snuggled in as close as he could get to his brother and fell asleep. Hank was his safe place.

There have been times, and situations, where I have found myself seeking a “safe place/person.” Any new experience seems to be easier to navigate with two or more of my “safe people.”

Remembering back to an amazing adventure in Ireland, I was beyond grateful to have daughter Amanda and her husband as part of our team. As Mac has said, we simply needed to pack our things and the kids took care of everything else! They got the flight, Air B&Bs, car rental, driving…everything! It allowed the senior citizens to enjoy the experience without any stress. They made us feel safe!

Feeling safe is so critical to enjoyment. When I feel a bit on edge, experiences are not as pleasant. The adrenaline kicks in and my mind does not allow me to dive into the moment. Keeping my safe people close at hand calms my heart and lets me completely savor an experience.

Moving forward, we will separate the puppies now and then for short periods. However, longer stretches of “adventure” will need to be done in tandem. They have been together even before being born (their birth order clocked them in as #6 and #7)! Why separate them now?
