Day 1511

Today, our Sam turns four! Coming from a litter of ten, he had to start young to make a name for himself. With “room at the table” for only eight learning to not back down was part of his new world. He has carried that quality with him throughout his young life!

Although my innermost moral compass cannot be shaken, standing my ground or defending my actions is a challenge. Always the empath, constantly checking other people’s feelings, reactions and emotions is what I do best. Of course, that allows me to not take a stand or create any waves. Often, I am more of a spectator than a warrior. With a goal of making peace when I am able, there have been a few instances when that is simply not an option.

When faced with any confrontation or dilemma, I typically sit back and observe. Nine times out of ten, I choose to support or soothe frayed nerves. However, there is a line I will cross if need be. Most often it is when my inner “Mama Bear” emerges. Those who have little to no voice, unfairness towards others or bullying will catch my attention every time. Choosing the role of negotiator is my first reaction, but there have been a few occasions when a need for stronger reactions is necessary.

As with my Goldens, I choose to flow down the continuum of calm vs anger very slowly. Having only lost my temper a handful of times, it seems to pack more of a punch when it happens. “Speak softly, but carry a big stick” could be my motto. That big stick is more powerful if it is never misused, seldom wielded and never threatening.

Just ask my Goldens! Well, they are probably not the best ones to “ask”… in my eyes, they can do no wrong! See less
