Day 1560

Sweet Gus…battling the effects of allergies while sporting the “Cone of Shame.” After the first hint of itching, we took him in to the vet for a Cyto-point shot and were back within two days for elevated major skin and eye issues! We came home with a “pharmacy” of medication and the need to wear the cone. Always patient, our boy has suffered through and has finally seemed to have turned the corner.

During the last week, we have been by his side to offer anything he needs. In the sunroom, we have a day bed where Gus can reside and see out the window. At night, his Mama sleeps on the bed with the patient (cone and all) resting right beside her. It has been a labor of true love to be with him each day.

People will often say that we are good dog parents. Honored by that suggestion, in reality, we simply do everything we can do to make their lives better. It is my belief that most dog owners would do the same.

There is the added layer of them being Therapy Dogs (pups will join those ranks ASAP) which makes them pretty important to people outside of our family. They touch lives and reside in many hearts. Hence, I tend to personify them and treat them a bit like our own children. This must be somewhat irritating to witnesses, but I am beyond any judgment. They are almost human in my eyes.

So, we continue to go a bit overboard with their health care…I recently joked that our vet is on speed dial and when it rings at their office it goes “Cha Ching.” I am also grateful that we can afford to make choices without going into debt! Are they lucky dogs? Not half as lucky as their humans!
