Day 1564
I always say that, without my Therapy Dog attached at the other end of a leash, access to comforting people would often be denied. Today, Gus brought smiles, calmed anxious hearts and helped a family who had just said goodbye to their father. None of that would have happened without my sweet, furry partner. The Golden Halo is magical. Simply leaning in or placing a head on a lap makes lives better.
What is it about these big dogs that changes a moment into a beautiful encounter? Is it their soft fur? Perhaps, the warm body or soft fur that presses close is the reason. Those deep pools of brown love pouring from their eyes might just be the trick. Whatever it is, they are angels to those they meet.
Human-to-human encounters can be similar in nature. A hand on a shoulder, a gentle hug, a listening ear can all help when someone is in need. We simply have to tap into our empathy once in a while and we can almost be “Therapy Humans”… even if we don’t have that beautiful fur.
I always try to be more dog-like in my life. Their trust, love and lack of judgment can only make me a better person if I embrace their gifts. Even though access to hearts is easier with a dog attached, I can still be open to needs when my Golden Boys are tucked safely away at home.
