Day 1572

Those of us who are old enough to remember that fateful day in 2001 know exactly where we were when we heard the heart-wrenching news from New York. Twenty five years later, it still breaks my heart when the anniversary arrives and the horror will remain with me for the rest of my life.

Along with all the precious lives lost that day, emerge stories of bravery and determination that saved the desperate people fleeing for safety. Among them are the “911 Dogs”. They rescued, comforted and never gave up. They are my heroes along with the First Responders and civilians who risked their lives to help others. Their stories are awe-inspiring.

Of course, there were other dog breeds involved, but the Goldens are what touched my heart the most. Looking at my own “Halo," I see some of the characteristics that helped save lives back then. Of course, their instinct for survival is strong, but they seem to place their human’s needs before their own. They trust us and, consequently, do what we ask of them. The 911 Dogs did just that. Burned paws, horrible noises, confusion and toxic smells… they looked at their humans and believed in their joint mission. They saved so many lives and comforted countless outstretched hands.

Heroes sometimes come on four legs…
