Day 1594

Sometimes, I look at my Golden Boys and wonder what they are thinking. Gus was looking out the window today and I imagined these thoughts going through his head…

“I wonder if my doggy friend, Toast, will be in his front yard so I can bark up a storm?”

“Rain makes mud. Mud gives me traction. Maybe I should try to go outside.”

“That squirrel is asking for it!”

“Ohhh…that dog walking by would be interesting to sniff!”

“If I ignore Mommy, maybe she will feel left out and scratch my ears!”

Well, since they can’t form words (like humans), perhaps they simply “feel.” Feelings of excitement, protection, angst, frustration and a host of other emotions must flit through their brains. Mostly powerless to achieve their desires, they seek safety and blissful relaxation at our feet. Yes, Gus is curled up by my chair snoring away…they all are.

People aren’t so different with their thoughts. Although I process the world with a vocabulary, I seldom think without emotion attached. Although veiled in whispers, my thoughts are formed through words. Sometimes, the words accompany the emotion, but other times, my heart reacts before the words appear…those are the ones I pay attention to.

Wishing my pups could talk to me is a common thought. I will even say to them, “I wish you could tell me what you want!” Then, I look into those brown eyes and pay attention to their faces, barks and body language. They don’t need words to tell me they are hungry, want to go outside or the water bowl is empty! Dr Doolittle has nothing on me!

The takeaway…words can sometimes be confusing and overrated. Trust the heart and your gut. They will never give you the wrong message.
