Day 1618

Our Sammy had his annual physical this morning and he is the picture of health (minus about ten pounds). He was so adorable that our veterinarian wanted to take him home. Sam is a sweet boy, but today was a challenging one for him. The smells and foggy memories of his tooth extraction were probably causing him some concern. Although typically a “Mama’s Boy,” today he felt safer with his “Dad!”

Sam and I have a special bond, but Mac was his safe person today.

Some people exude an aura of safety. Typically, it is someone with life experiences that make the mundane challenges of “every day” seem absolutely non-threatening. Perhaps they were in the military, had a difficult childhood or had an occupation that created strength and resilience. Whatever the source of that strength, it is a gift to those around them!

There are many different types of strength in people. As for these “Sanctuary Individuals,” they seem to have common attributes that draw us to them. Calm, wise, resilient, strong and honest are just a few. If you are lucky enough to have one (or more) in your life, you are fortunate indeed.

Today, Sam gravitated towards the person who made him feel safe. When the shots were administered, he did pivot back into my arms. At that point, he probably just needed to be babied…my forte’!
