We have a little ritual each night before bedtime. Each Golden individually heads out to the backyard to have a “moment with nature.” Because the darkness seems to be a bit unsettling for the boys, I am their chaperone. Armed with bags, treats and a flashlight, their “Mama Shadow” heads out to spend a bit of quality time and make sure they are doing well from head to toe. The neighbors probably think this routine is a bit strange, but it works for us.
When the darkness surrounds us, it is a beautiful thing. While the pups sniff out the latest chipmunk, I have the joy of looking at the stars, constellations, the moon and the trees. The night noises are mysterious and subtle… I can only guess at the source of the rustling, but I am intrigued.
When a pup is done, I go to the doggy door, knock three times and Mr. Mac brings one in and allows the next one out to explore. When all are done, I head in the human door to tuck them all into bed.
Having spent my life in that backyard, I feel embraced by my surroundings. Whether day or night, memories swirl around me and I can almost see shadows from the past. It is a lovely feeling.
Now, ask me if I am loving these little outings when January rolls around with ice and freezing temperatures! The answer will probably be “yes”, but there may be fewer moments spent gazing at the sky!
