Day 1094

Mama Duck has taken up residence in our yard this spring. She has almost become my 5th Golden! I feed her and offer water numerous times a day and even hold conversations now-and-then! She follows me around when I weed or plant in the yard and almost seems to be observing my prowess at gardening. She has taken on a personality and I am surprised at her growing trust for me.

It seems to me that “animal trust” is different than “human trust.” The foundation (for animals) is built on experience. Human trust has the additional ingredient of words and promises. Mrs. Duck is only able to base her judgment on my actions. Over time, she has learned that I approach gently, speak softly, avoid sudden movements at all costs. I am not a threat!

For those humans who trust me, the added element of the spoken word typically gives them extra comfort. I can yell and gesticulate to my heart’s content, but my words can be the real “make-it-or-break-it” trust factor. Unlike my duck, humans decipher my words carefully…

*Am I being honest?

*Do I have a history of keeping promises?

*Am I perceived as being sincere?

*Am I being other-oriented!

*Do I say one thing, but do another?

Humans are a complex bunch! As I faced that Mama Duck, I placed her food before her and thanked her for trusting me with our unique relationship. It feels good to simply share time and space without any spoken elements of trust. I hope she feels the same way!
