Day 1112
Sometimes, there is a joyful surprise that makes your spirit soar! Today, Gus got that surprise! We were up at the cottage when Jimmy showed up! For our Gus, it was the doggy equivalent of a trip to Walt Disney World! He was thrilled…they all were!
For the most part, it is pretty hard to totally surprise me. It has been done (friends whisking me to Las Vegas for a Bachelorette Party!), but I am typically hyper-aware of all that goes on around me. That can be a blessing or a curse!
Perhaps it is years of trying to stay one step ahead of second grade students or years of Therapy Dogging, but I can read the room and predict what might be just around the corner. Although this observant nature can avoid conflict, accidents and unpleasant encounters, it does come with price. Most social outings are overshadowed with angst about what might go wrong…watching people’s expressions, mannerisms and also the environment around all of us. Always trying to avoid anyone feeling left out, embarrassed or sad is a challenge.
That makes those encounters, with trusted, beloved people all the more precious. Letting down my guard is such a lovely feeling and one that I appreciate beyond words. Although it would be nice to be oblivious in social settings, it is also good to know that there may have been a few accidents, blunders and confrontations that have been averted due to those of us who are constantly reading the room.
Still, surprises are delightful… just ask Gus!
