Day 1160
Due to some “driveway reconstruction” over the past few days, the Goldens did not have access to their regular outside routines. Between walks and leashed visits to the front yard, they seemed to need to exert a bit more energy (play-fighting in the house). The answer to that was a romp in daughter Katie’s backyard!
Since Kate lives right next door, we guided the pups in that direction and closed her gate. Their beautiful backyard was a new and exciting adventure! All four entered with tails wagging and it took all of five seconds for the boys to take off at a gallop! It was pure, unbridled joy! Sammy leaned into every turn with Gus nipping at his heels!
After few minutes, they expanded their circles and began to tear brought Katie’s plants and landscaping! Calling them over, to my horror, they had picked up sand burrs galore! Hundreds were stuck to each Golden coat! Holy Moly!
After retrieving my retrievers, we headed home to assess the damage. It took an hour to rid them of those nasty burrs! However, each pup stoically took their turn as I wielded comb, scissors and The Furminator and they patiently allowed me to hack away! Poor babies!
Somehow, they seemed to know we were helping them. As Mac soothed and I played the part of beautician, they didn’t fuss or attempt escape. Standing or laying down, each one took their turn.
We all have been in situations where we are being “helped” for our own good! Even though it’s not enjoyable, we tend to recognize the value and that we will be better when it’s over. Whether it is the dentist, an educator, an “exercise cheerleader”, or a host of other supporters, I always try to find gratitude in my heart for their efforts… well, maybe not in the case of the dentist!
