Day 1179

Rituals hold a special place in our hearts. Unlike habits or routines, rituals are deeply rooted in our beings and have meaning and a history.

For example, every morning, I change our decorative calendars, fix the dog bowls and numerous other routines while Mr. Mac fills the water dishes and starts the coffee pot. We are a well-oiled duo!

On the meaningful side of our daily sojourn are the rituals. Sammy jumps up on the bed and into my arms to start the day with loving belly rubs and scratches. Ranger gets his back scratch and a treat while Gus and Lilly get “The Car Wash” (body rubs as they take turns walking between our feet and shaking off the night’s cobwebs). Each pup counts on those rituals and loves every minute. The bonding is evident.

Rituals are such a part of any loving group. Families have holiday celebrations which are held close. Asher’s Scout troop honors their group by respectfully carrying out their various rituals while learning to be wonderful citizens. Our military is filled with rituals that are followed to develop safety and respect. The list goes on and on, but my belief is that rituals connect us since they are not mindless repetitions. They are meaningful experiences repeated so that hearts bond.

It’s almost time for “Tummy Time,” where Ranger reminds us to prepare the food with his very vocal ways and then leads the parade into the kitchen. What might have started out as a routine event has become a ritual full of love, communication and appreciation. Rituals are certainly worth the repetition and heart… just ask Ranger!
