Day 1224
Lilly was our shining “Door Monitor.” She would position her radiant ‘Golden Self’ in a doorway and decide who might pass through.
Ranger: Absolutely!
Gus: Perhaps…
Sam: Not today!
With an imperceptible nod or a low, throaty growl, she would grant or deny access.
Ranger has taken on that position, but is rather unaware of the protocol. Basically, everybody gets to pass. Still, he carries on her legacy.
If we are lucky and blessed enough to march through the decades of life, we all step into shoes that were once worn by beloved elders. Hosting holidays, protecting the memories, keeper of the recipes, offering wisdom…and so much more become our job description. Evolving to matriarch or patriarch does not come with a job description or set of instructions. It unfolds as you watch those who have walked before you.
There is no guarantee that one will wear the “crown” well, but the role falls on your shoulders whether you choose it or not. Through joy, sadness, dysfunction, confusion, change and challenges, people rely on you…perhaps not to necessarily lead, but simply to be there.
Whether the “crown” is sitting proud, slightly askew or held in your hand as you shake your head, lean into the role with a heart full of love. After all, someone down the chain is observing and taking notes.
