Day 1316
We were hauling some items to our basement when a puppy gate accidently fell over. Ranger and Sam gave the offending item a cursory glance, but Gus immediately went into a full blown imitation of Barney Fife (Andy Griffith Show)! After skittering dramatically around, he flew under the dining room table to peer out cautiously. Poor buddy!
Being startled is rather disturbing to anyone. When you have prior incidents, where you have been surprised into fear, the reaction can be more dramatic. Understanding responses can be the first step towards helping someone with their fear.
Husband Mac experienced a mine explosion in Vietnam. He DOES NOT react well to loud noises. I attempt to warn him when fireworks, gun salutes or other extremely clamorous sounds are imminent. When I am also surprised, reaching out to comfort happens spontaneously. The same is true for small children with fears, adults with any trauma or my Goldens when something frightens them.
The best antidote for fear seems to be a human touch. A steady hand on an arm, a hug or even calming words can make a world of difference for someone who has adrenaline racing through their body. For me, a Golden paw on my arm is also very therapeutic!
