Day 1351
Once again, Ranger headed over to our neighborhood elementary school to read with the students. Starting with second grade in the morning, we returned in the afternoon to read with first graders. We entered the younger classroom and the teacher introduced us. After sharing that I was Miss Laurie, she asked the class if any knew the name of the dog. A resounding shout of “Ranger” ricocheted around the classroom. He is pretty famous there!
As we walked the halls and met with students, I was surprised by how many of the youngsters actually lived in our neighborhood. It seriously warmed my heart when one second grader said, “I saw you at the Pinewood Derby yesterday! I got 4th, but Asher won!” There was no remorse in his tone…only happiness that my grandson had placed 1st. (There were ten Scouts from the neighborhood at that event!) Remarkable!
Neighborhoods come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but most contain a kindred spirit at their core. I know our own neighborhood is a beautiful place to belong. There is an honest caring and concern for everyone who is a member.
*Every child belongs to every parent whenever needed.
*Favors are requested and returned.
*Sidewalks and driveways are plowed and shoveled by those who have more energy or time.
*Support is readily offered when others are in need.
*We celebrate and gather together.
*We all know every child’s name.
*We even know every DOG’S name!!!!

Realizing that the Christian Hill Neighborhood is a special place to live makes me feel fortunate indeed. Hoping that other neighborhoods have the same kinds of connections gives me a positive outlook for the future. When we know our neighbors, it opens our hearts to something bigger than ourselves and that seems to be an important, tangible thing indeed!
Be encouraged to reach out to your neighbors and get to know them. It makes for a safe, warm feeling every time you walk out your door! While you’re at it, find out the names of their dogs! That just might be the quickest way to their hearts!
