Day 1384
When cooking in the kitchen, there are ALWAYS sous chefs! Today, we had two new prodigies who watched my every move. Stepping over and around all of the Goldens might slow my movements down, but their company makes up for every stretch and high step.
Creating meals for my loved ones brings me so much joy. Perhaps it is from watching my own Mom and Nanny in that very kitchen or due to some strong ancestral pull, but preparing food for family is a favorite pastime. Nanny relied mostly on her memory for recipes from her family. Born in 1885, her cooking and baking were totally from scratch. She would often reach into the flour bin to add a bit more “thickening” or take a pinch of salt if it didn’t taste just right. My own mother followed her lead. Now, here I am in the same kitchen with so many of their “teachings” guiding my way.
Old family recipes, beloved cookbooks or inventive creations are all tried and tested. Most get the family seal of approval. My predecessors almost always found success, but Nanny had a wonderful saying…
“You can always save a marginal meal with a great dessert!”
That is my motto as well! I better get that cake out of the oven before my Golden helpers realize there just might be a warm treat at “puppy level!”
