Day 1416
Day 1416. “Walking With Goldens”
“Everyone Needs a Little Love” are words we should all remember. My Goldens remind me of that with each visit as they deliver affection and unconditional love to people who might just need it the most. Nurses, teachers, senior citizens, children, patients, staff and almost everyone we meet is open to the love therapy dogs offer. Witnessing the connection is a gift for me at the other end of the leash.
The other day, at Walker, we were handed a note with a name and room number; the staff had noticed that a newer resident was hesitant to join most festivities and thought a therapy dog might help. Impressed by their commitment to residents, I let them know we would certainly see if we could help.
Knocking at her door, a sweet voice asked us to enter. We visited for some time and learned a lot. Our new friend has a dog that needed to stay with family, a hope to decorate her apartment to make it feel homier, a beautiful smile, and an aura of loneliness that came through loud and clear. When it was time to go, I promised to return the next week for a longer visit; she just needs a bit of settling in and a bunch of love.
There are so many residents who have requested a weekly visit. At one point, a list of over 40 had specifically requested us to stop by their apartment. I eventually added a second day to this venue so people could gather in a big group to visit the pup and each other. Hoping to bring people together is the goal…the bait is my Therapy Dogs!
Our new friend might eventually join us for our group time with a pup. Until that goal is met, we will visit her and share the love where we can. With Charlie and Hank joining the team on an unofficial level, these seniors can’t get away from a Golden if they tried! The “Halo” shares love without even trying! I learn from those furry boys every single day!
