Day 1436

I looked at Hank for a “l o n g” moment this morning. Believe me, it was a gift because Brother Charlie is never far away! Yet, there he was … 4 1/2 months here on earth. I looked at his beautiful face, his big feet and that spot on his lip that his brother chomped on and I thought, “I can see the adult dog you will become! He is going to be so very handsome!"

On the inside, Hank is beautiful too. He was chosen by his first family as the sweetest puppy in the litter. They knew. This boy is full of love and a need to be close. Hank will be a wonderful Therapy Dog! Don’t worry Charlie…you will be too!

Today, volunteering at Lincoln Elementary, I looked at the second graders who were my charges for the day. Like my puppies, they are beautiful on the inside and outside. Such relatively new beings on this earth and yet, I could see a hint of the road ahead for each one. It occurred to me that, for the one or two that seemed troubled by life, we could lean in and change their course ever-so-slightly. That might just be all it takes.

It does take a village, but I have read that each child needs at least three adult mentors in their formative years. Three is not a huge number, but it might be unreachable for one or two of the little guys.

Never hesitate to reach out to the young in our world. My dear Nanny would always vote for any school improvement bonds or levies. When asked why, she would answer, “They are our future.”

Be part of the village in any way you can. Those little people are so worthy of our love and support!
