Day 1458

Our little Hank has been suffering from a bout of indigestion. With the veterinary clinic on speed dial, we decided to take him in to make sure it was just “something he ate in the yard.”

One of the amazing veterinarians at our clinic ordered a few tests and then knocked on our door. Seeing sweet Hank inside, she said what SO many people have said…”I needed this today!” She proceeded to sit down on the floor and gather him close. Staying on there, with Hank loving the interaction, she softly stroked his ears and seemed to gather a sense of calm with each touch. She helped us with our little boy’s tummy and Hank helped her to calmly relax and refocus. She stayed that way for a long time, but when she stood up, she looked like she had gleaned extra strength to face the day. Hank…

I have heard it said that “Every dog is a Therapy Dog…it’s only that some are certified.” I truly believe that sentiment. The only difference being that we can actually visit schools, hospitals and senior living homes. However, even without the classes and testing, I guarantee that every dog you see is working their magic as they pad along.

Years ago, I saw my first ever Therapy Dog at Mercy Hospital and I was mesmerized! Asking a few pertinent questions, I realized that the little voice within could not be silenced. This was my future! Signing dear Arthur up for his first class at age six was a a leap of faith. I was driven to do this and never looked in the rear view mirror. Arthur, Nicky, Ranger, Lilly, Gus and Sam have all walked the Therapy Dog journey and I am so honored to hold their leash.

If you ever consider doing this work, please follow your heart. The beauty and power of this volunteer work is beyond anything I ever imagined.
