Day 1473

I saved a turtle today.

Driving to my dental appointment (added bonus: a beloved student was working the desk!), my mind was on the possible discomfort awaiting. I drove past my left turn and caught the next one to head back to the clinic.

Just crossing the street was a painted turtle. He had made it to the gutter area as I passed. My mind and heart took a moment to focus on the situation. I realized the big guy (at least 10 inches) had encountered the “wall” and started to turn around. Pulling over, I jumped out of the car and ran towards my little buddy. Waving a car or two off, I reached him in time. Picking him up and speaking calming turtle words to him, I searched around for a pond or water of any type. To my delight, about 15 yards away was a slope to a small pond. Arriving there, I took a careful step into the underbrush and gently set him down facing the pond. He scuttled off with glee! There was no gratitude… only joy as he headed down the slope. “Live well, Buddy!”

I didn’t need any thanks … it wasn’t about that. It was about being kind. So many times, kindness does not pull out gratitude from the recipient. In my world, that is not important. Doing the kind, loving thing is the goal… that act itself is thanks enough.

My Goldens live life that way. They love and show affection to everyone they meet. They never expect gratitude and settle for a scratch behind the ear. They are altruistic in the true sense of the word. Their kindness comes from within. I learn from them.

I saved a turtle today and my heart is full.
