Day 1493

My Goldens enjoy life without any electronics! They do have a guilty pleasure of watching “Dog TV” now and then, but otherwise, they find their entertainment elsewhere. Like toddlers, the natural world is their playground and everything is interesting.

This morning, we had a water meter replaced by the city. When your home was built in 1867, it can be a fascinating process. We emptied a closet (thank you Jimmy!) and hoisted up a big lid on a large wooden structure to REACH down into the basement ceiling in order to swap them out. The dogs were a bit mystified by the hubbub, so I whisked them out to the front porch. I moved so quickly that I neglected to bring ANYTHING to entertain myself. No phone, no book, no magazine, no pen/paper…I was at a loss!

Of course, the irony hit me in a moment or two. Throwing stones at the younger generations for always needing their “devices” and remembering my own amazing childhood with very limited electronics (TV- 5 channels/black and white, transistor radio, record player, rotary wall phone), I shook my head. It took me almost five minutes to actually calm my brain down and convince myself that Amazon Prime Day would be there when I was reunited with my phone.

First, I marveled at the clouds passing overhead. Next, I concentrated on the sounds of the summer. Of course, I had five Goldens to love, so time was spent focused solely on my babies. When the technician left, I reentered the house with a relaxed brain that had slowed down from its usual hyper-speed! It felt so good!

My intention going forward is to abandon the electronics from time-to-time and enjoy the simple things around me. Of course, that will have to wait until Prime Day is a thing of the past!
