Day 1518

When you come from a big family, whether two-legged or four-, there are times when someone gets lost in the shuffle. Making time for a one-on-one seems to be pretty crucial for the individual feeling left out.

When my own children were young, I made every effort to single each one out and lavish attention on them. This was in the form of “Mommy and Me” classes, a bike ride, s note in their lunchbox, a play or any other activity that could be done as a duo. As they grew up, it was a bit more challenging but, despite the pull from peer relationships, we still found the time to just be together. As adults, it is much easier to meet for a meal or coffee. It just needs to happen.

Getting “lost in the crowd” of people and daily lives, there are those who wander and would blossom with attention just for them. No matter the age, child to senior, it is my goal to be on the lookout for eyes that cry out for attention. Even a few minutes of time, spent asking questions about their world, can fill an empty “tank” to overflowing. It’s worth the vigilance and effort.

The same goes for Goldens! Sam in particular, but all my boys can look a bit forlorn. When I see that look, it only takes a few kind words and a bit of “belly-rubbing” to help their gauge go from empty to full!

The next time you see someone who looks a little lonely, don’t be afraid to engage them for a moment. It just might be what the doctor ordered!
