Day 1527

Mr. Ranger is a force! He has become extremely verbal with his thoughts, needs and opinions! For example, within ten to fifteen minutes prior to a doggy meal, he will confront us with incessant barking and nudges to get moving! It works like a charm!

He also gives his opinion regarding treats, outside time and the need for affection. He is no longer a patient pup!

Although I am not an advocate for impatience, it does seem “the squeaky wheel gets the oil!” Now, for a thirteen-year-old Golden, the “cute factor” cancels out any perceived rudeness. Humans cannot count on that factor!

Navigating the “ins and outs” of making your wants and needs known…without seeming rude or selfish… is a challenge. Speaking out must also take into consideration the audience. It’s one thing to ask my dear husband for a favor and another to address a need that includes multiple players. It’s a tricky business at best.

When asking for something, I try to follow three easy rules:

1. Is it worth the risk to receive a “NO” response?

2. Are there other avenues available to achieve your goal?

3. How important is this “need” and will you feel indebted forever when someone answers your plea?

For me, I try to fix or acquire things without asking for assistance. That way, I have control over the outcome. However, there is no shame in asking someone for help. You will achieve your goal and make the other person feel needed and special.

Ranger’s whispers have now built themselves into a crescendo, so I better get that food to him before he takes matters into his own paws!
