Day 1547

This is the face of peace…a combination of trust, safety and contentment. This is how I found Gus when I headed to bed last night. Something made him decide he needed a bit of comfort and human connection, so there he was. Now, that dog can sleep so soundly (or become the best actor on four legs), so I slid in and held on so I didn’t tumble out. Was it uncomfortable? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes. Gus simply needed to feel safe and we are his refuge.

Of course we can all list those “Safe Haven” people in our lives. They are the ones who provided that safety net when we had a need to be comforted. If I were to list their combined attributes, it would boil down to “wisdom,” “trust” and a feeling of “refuge.” Those people, in my past and present life, cheered me on and opened their arms to comfort or celebrate. What a gift.

Those role models molded me into someone who attempts to be the arms that offer peace whenever loved ones need refuge. Even trying to be that haven for The Goldens is a goal. The rewards are rich in that they offer back a deep connection to another (two and four-legged). It is often a symbiotic relationship where both sides balance the give-and-take of trust beautifully.

Tonight, I will be sure to get into bed earlier than Gus! That will guarantee a little more legroom! It’s worth every crowded snuggle!
