Day 1607
It was “bath day” at The Big White House. My boys do not particularly like the shower, but when I roll my jeans up and kick off my shoes, somebody always volunteers to step in with me! Shampoo, rinse, dry…repeat! It went well. As I sit with four slightly soggy Goldens (Ranger gets a special bath), it occurs to me that “you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar”…kindness beats out harshness every time. Making the shower be a place of love and safety allows the boys to relax and walk right in.
I always choose positive reinforcement over punishment. I suppose both work to some degree, but the first response to an issue leaves the “challenger” with dignity and the feeling that they were in control and chose the correct response to the request. Their pride is intact.
With the Goldens and their sensitive natures, they simply want to please. Punishments seem to shut them down while praise feeds their soul. Children are the same in my opinion. Now, I do believe in responsible consequences. If dogs or kids know the rules and expectations, then making the right choice should be the easiest route to follow. If not, expected consequences should not be a surprise.
Bath Day is in the books and I am full of gratitude for the positive, loving time we had. Luckily, I didn’t have to redirect the boys with force! 90 to 100 pounds of shoving would NOT BE PRETTY!!!!!!!!
